Luke and I have an ongoing debate, sometimes argument about the validity of banning Taiwan from our purchases this year.
I think any country that includes the words, "Republic of China" on its products deserves to be boycotted.
Luke asserts that Taiwan is no longer controlled by, politically connected with or vested in China.
I don't really care. If Uzbekistan wanted to slap the words, "Republic of China" or "R.O.C" on their goods, I feel that they should by boycotted by association this year.
I don't really know why he cares if we boycott Taiwan in the first place, since this boycott hardly affects him (unless I am in a rage about something I can't buy, then he bears the brunt of my frustrations!).
I am curious how others would see this, boycott or not? And if Taiwan is not in anyway vested in China, why are those letters on their goods?
Does anyone have any answers for me?

I don't really know why but I suspect that they are hedging their bets. It lets people outside of China know that they are made by people of Chinese origin but not living in China. At the same time the Chinese government sees that they saying they are Chinese. It comes down to politics.
I still think that Taiwan falls outside of the boycott for this year. Taiwan is internationally recognized as its own nation. The only people who dispute this are the Chinese, who still see Taiwan as part of China. I might also have some selfish reasons for doing this as Taiwan tends to make a large number of electronics. Maybe we can expand next year's boycott to include more nations!
Taiwan should not count for the boycott because the Taiwanese government is separate from and independent of the government in Beijing. Taiwan separated from mainland China (People's Republic of China) when the Communists took over China. Taiwan has a democratic government.
Hey, I came across your blog. I am considering a full boycott of China because I'm critical of their government and of American Yuppies' full endorsement of their totalitarian, fascistic, practical slavery of some.
Taiwan should not be boycotted unless there is no alternative. Taiwan was once a dictatorship until the early 1990s. Now since it is a democracy, it needs our help. Taiwan is falling under increased pressure to surrender to Chinese authority and is not recognized by the UN. If its industry fails, it will surely succumb to PRC control, and the world will lose a crucial democracy.
It's government claims to be the rightful government of China officially, but it would gladly give up that claim if it were granted independence.

Thank you both for your posts. I must say that you've given me quite a bit to think about. I can't find any fault with your reasons and they seem far better thought out than my reason for boycotting Taiwan. I think I will have to consider a change of heart. (My partner will be thrilled, by the way, since most things he wants to buy are made in Taiwan).

I agree with Numberonesurvivor. On US mail, "R.O.C" and "P.R.O.C" (People's Republic of China) are understood as distinct.
From n@50's comment: it's not just letting people of Chinese origin but not living in China know the product is not from China. Quality and production codes are different in Taiwan from China. (They have a higher food safety standard too.) I'm not suggesting that "Made in Taiwan" equates superior quality, but it signals that it might have been manufactured under some different conditions.

Posting on my blog is far more interesting than my Public Health homework and I never considered that Taiwan is it's own democracy and in need of financial support. I must confess that my original reason for boycotting Taiwan was simply the letters R.O.C. stamped on it's exports. It is not a well thought out or even intelligent reason and I am both thrilled and humbled by these viewpoints that it should not count.
For selfish reasons, it would make my life easier, I could buy more underwear, or jeans, or electronic devices. It would have made buying a cell phone easier.
The best reasons for not boycotting Taiwan have come from my readers though, and I really appreciate that and would like to revise my original stance.
Taiwan, as an independent country, should not be included in this boycott anymore than Canada or any other country. The initial focus was, and should remain, China.
Taiwan (or R.O.C) is not part of China. In fact, the P.R.O.C never controls Taiwan (but they think they own it for political reasons).

Thank you for your post. Clearly I am outnumbered here, and with good reason. I just wish that someone could explain to me why the letters R.O.C. are sometimes included after the word Taiwan.

I truly believe that we have reached the point where technology has become one with our lives, and I think it is safe to say that we have passed the point of no return in our relationship with technology.

Taiwan is a democracy, and the Taiwanese do not consider themselves part of China, only China does. They live under constant threat of invasion from China. They put R.O.C. after their name because they have a huge nuclear Chinese gun pointed at their heads. If it wasn't for the United States' pledge to protect them, China would have taken them over long ago.
I boycott China too, and go out of my way to buy products made in Japan, Taiwan, or Korea if I don't have an American choice.
